In the 2003-2008 time period I was making a decent income in my semi-retirement which, combined with an accommodating work schedule and friendly dice, allowed me to get to my local houses of investment in Jackpot a couple times a month. The dice turned on me in 2008, and the credit crunch near the end of that year reduced trip frequency eventually to zero. I got to play only once from 2012 to 2017. Managed to get in a couple sessions in 2018, but none the next two years, mostly thanks to Covid. I took my first (and so far only) post-pandemic-restrictions trip to Jackpot two or so weeks ago. This is what I found.

I arrived a Cactus Pete's in the afternoon to find the craps tables closed until 6pm (swing shift). I can't say I was surprised; I'm sure Pete's staffing was decimated like that of every other business in the hospitality industry.

There were very few familiar faces at Pete's, where I have played almost exclusively, and none on the inside. Due to my infrequent attendance over the last 10 years, and IIRC three iterations of casino ownership, all of my points had vanished, so I was SOL for comps.

Arrived at Pete's in the afternoon. No craps until 6pm (swing shift), so I tried blackjack. The rules seemed a little better: DOA (pre-pandemic you could double only on 9, 10, and 11), no DAS, no RSA. Pre-pandemic they offered Royal Match, but at the only table they had open when I played they now have two screwball bonus bets, one of which is related to three-card-poker using the player's first two cards and the dealer's up card. (I can't remember what the other one was.)

After dropping a hundred I walked across the street to Horseshu; it was closed! (Did I mention the pandemic's effect on the hospitality industry?) I was disappointed but not all that surprised.

I walked up the street to 93 Club. I had not walked into the joint for 20 years due to their "if you win you obviously cheated" attitude. No craps; no convenient space at blackjack; I left after leaving a token of my appreciation in the restroom. (Did not use Dice Thug messaging app.)

Went back to Pete's and hung out in the sports bar until the craps table opened, making no bets. When the table did open it was as a tub and filled up rapidly. It was a slow game due to rookie dealers -- did I mention the pandemic's effect on the hospitality industry? -- and made slower by a woman who not only took forever to place her action, but also stepped away from the table to take and make phone calls. (Apparently her sister had left town without her!) But wait, there's more! Because she was a ploppy the crew stopped the game while she was on the phone! She kept intimating a ride was on the way and she would be leaving soon, but when the ride arrived the ride-givers decided not to leave immediately so the game continued at a snail's pace.

The only other time I have seen a game halted was when a decision required Mission Control to review the surveillance tape. On a comeout roll with the dice in the air a guy at the non-shooting end accidentally (or perhaps "accidentally" ;)) dropped a pile of chips on top of a Pass Line bet he had made. "7, a winner" was the call and the guy wanted to be paid for the whole mess. After further review he got paid for his original bet only.

I think it was Scoblette who reported in one of his books about a player who had a heart attack at the table, and while he was being attended to the game continued, and our's stopped for phone calls?! Give me a break! I'm afraid this nonsense has not inspired me to make a return to the tables a priority. (BTW total damage was around $600, which of course is within tolerance but does nothing to offset the amateur night experience.)

If you had continued to drive south for another 450 miles on SR 93 (to Las Vegas), your luck might have changed. Next time you make the pilgrimage to Jackpot or points south, you should tow a trailer.

That actually isn't a bad idea; Cactus Pete's parking lot has a truck/RV area. Now, if only I had a ... Wait, I DO have a trailer. Now, if only I could get She Who Must Be Obeyed And Has The Trailer Set Up For Dog Events let me use it. :(

Forgot to mention that I encountered Interblok bubble craps on the trip, both four-seat individual version and stadium version. Was not impressed, particularly with the individual version. Maybe it was because there was no one playing, but periodically all the stations would energize and some hag would excitedly spout some unintelligible gibberish, no doubt to attract players. If that were to go on while I was playing it would be a very short session.

The stadium version had other games, one of which was blackjack. It displayed a history of dealer hands, 50 IIRC. I never saw anyone playing, and was not surprised when I looked once and, again IIRC, the dealer had made 18 of the last 20 hands. Run away. Run away.

The mute button is in the upper right corner of the screen. If nobody is playing the other terminals I always mute them if they're using that version of software. The ones running older software don't do the pimp shit.

I have been to Jackpot, NV. One time.

During my incarnation as a charter bus driver on the West Coast, I picked up a tour in San Francisco and we headed for Yellowstone Nat'l park. Group of Europeans, mostly Germans; hard drinkers if I remember it.

First day we drove as far as my ICC log book allowed which got us to Elko, NV.

The next morning we stopped in Jackpot for a quick coffee break on our way to Idaho. Don't remember the particulars about the stop, Don't think it was Cactus Pete's.

Leaving the park our destination was Los Angeles so we dropped down through Utah, overnighting in SLC, then on to Vegas, and ending in Los Angeles.

I think as long as casinos decide craps tables are only worth operating at 15-25 dollar min bets I will continue to enjoy bubble craps any version

Elko is the only city outside of Wyoming I know where you can quickly distinguish locals from visitors: the locals are the ones wearing cowboy hats.

This brings to mind an incident that occurred on the trip. A cocktail waitress who delivered a drink I ordered -- for some reason I do not remember what the drink was :D -- was not as well endowed as depicted but had a very wide cleavage and was wearing a very low cut top. I tipped her, she continued her rounds, and I confessed to the dealer, "I almost put that chip in a very inappropriate place,"...and that is a true fact!

My city is a lot like that, except the locals are the ones wearing the "hoodies". :)

With the wife out of state visiting her sister I chose to sneak down to my local investment broker in Jackpot, NV, last Thursday. As some stand up comedians are fond of saying, I knew there was life in the vicinity; I occasionally heard sounds of breathing. According to a rumor being circulated by the public address system Nevada law now requires masks to be worn at all times except in a restaurant by patrons sitting at a table with food and/or beverage thereon. Maybe that accounts for the scarcity of patrons…and the accentuated breathing sounds.

As I mentioned previously Cactus Pete’s has installed Interblok bubble craps. Not knowing if the live game would be open on a Thursday morning I planned to use Jim’s Parlay Method (JPM) with my modification that includes front-side odds. I also constructed a spreadsheet to calculate the house advantages of some bets assuming the die faces that had landed on the bottom on the previous roll had less chance of showing than the other faces. (For example, if snake eyes rolled then the 6 faces of each die would have less chance of showing on the next roll, which I thought might make a Place 6 bet player positive.) It turned out that if the bottom faces had only a 15% chance of showing (instead of the random 16.666…%) a few place bets did become player positive…out in the third decimal place after one or two specific rolls (like the example I gave). I may revisit this exercise, but for now I have written it off as not worth the effort.

To be continued…I hope. I have been fighting server errors for three days and am out of guesses as to what is about my post that is causing them. As a last resort, and perhaps under the delusion that what I have to say is worth the effort, I am trying a piecemeal approach on the off chance the problem is a buffer somewhere that has garbage in it that needs to be cleared.

Welcome back. Try writing your post elsewhere and copying it here. Seems to be a timeout issue. If you're replying to a post with an Emoji, delete the emoji.

I knew about the emoji problem. I composed my post in LibreOffice. In the past this has not been a problem, but I have upgraded that product during my absence from here, so I copied it to Notepad to remove any hidden formatting characters the LO Writer might have added. Still whiffing, and with only five lines! I really don't want to type in three pages from scratch.

I wonder if I can get away with editing an existing post. Trying that now.

Didn't work when copied from Notepad.

I reported the problem to the webmaster as directed by the error messages I was getting. Having waited a couple weeks I am trying to post the aforementioned continuation to my second trip report despite having heard nary a peep from any server attendant. After several failures I have found the problem, and I am not kidding: it is the word “f.r.o.m” without the periods! SERIOUSLY?!

    - - - - -

The trip itself started and ended well on the four-station bubble; in between, not so well on the live game (a tub) after it opened. While sitting out a dry spell I tried the Interblok multi-game stadium machine but could not figure out how to get the craps game to work. (I put in my player’s card and money, and selected craps f.r.o.m the initial menu, but it appeared to indicate that game was not available, and nothing I touched on the terminal screen did anything. I just happened to think, though, that maybe there is a button somewhere I needed to push to gain access to a game layout. With no “attendant” in sight I gave up and cashed out.)

I liked that there was apparently no time limit for “pushing the button” on the bubble machine, but I do have the following complaints:

    • As I observed in my post on my previous trip unused stations activate periodically. While it is possible to silence the stickhag on one’s own station – thank you Mssthis1 for pointing that feature out – there is no gag function available on the empty ones. (I did not try bringing up the layout and muting the sound. That might have provided temporary relief until the display reset.) Fortunately I was able to tune her out.

    • Twice that I remember and maybe every time when I started playing there was a hand in progress with a point established. There is a history line of the last 20 or so rolls at the bottom of the screen, but the display of the last roll (which is not necessarily what is showing on the dice because they may have been tossed when the station was vacant) obscures the last few rolls that were made when someone was actually playing. This was a little inconvenient being as I was using JPM, which selects its bet by observing two Pass Line decisions, then betting that the decision before last will repeat.

    • The limit of 2x odds meant I often had to use place bets to bring my front side bets w/odds up to what they should be after two wins. I also discovered by accident that Doey/Don’t betting is disallowed.

    • Twice I encountered a “Fatal system error – call attendant” message with an established don’t bet. All my bets disappeared and the terminal became unresponsive. The first time I was fortunate in that a technician was working on one of the other stations and so was at hand, but the second time I had to leave the machine and accost a pit suit in the inner sanctum. f.r.o.m observing the actions of the tech effecting the resurrection – remember, the error was fatal – I’m guessing the computer module that controls the game was not seated securely enough to survive a modicum of vibration f.r.o.m the dice popper. (The machine did keep track of how much I had in my virtual rack and was able to print a cashout ticket, but now that I think about it I cannot say with absolute certainty if my bets that were in action at the time of the system’s demise went back in the rack or just went away.)

A couple incidents occurred on the live game, a $5-$500 table with 10x odds.

    • I learned that the minimum applied to the total amount a player has at risk as well as to the minimum amount of a single non-proposition bet when I was waiting for a 5-count to complete and tried to make a two-way hardway for $1 each. I opted not to make any bet; I do not remember if I/we would have won or not.

    • Towards the end of my stay at the table a black chipper had a good run betting $100 don’t with 2½x odds, racking about 3K. When he got behind 4 he went for the gusto: $100 flat w/$2000 odds! The dealer, a veteran BTW, balked, citing the table max. The player persisted citing the 10x odds. The dealer looked to the podium, which was deserted at that moment (thanks to the Covid-caused staff shortage, no doubt) and booked the bet rather than stop the game. I have to think this was a mistake, that the lid would trump the odds multiplier. The point made, so assuming Mission Control was as short staffed as the rest of the joint we were spared any fireworks that would undoubtedly have erupted had the bet won. It took several rolls to get a resolution, however, all the players got a couple moments of excitement out of the deal.

The 2K odds bet inspired yours truly to recount a tale f.r.o.m a few decades ago at Ramada Express in Laughlin, NV. A guy steps up to the table as the shooter was coming out and drops a stack of paper on the Pass Line. Seven was the call. The dealer spreads the cash, $1000 worth, which was the table limit, and pays the guy, who picks up the 2K and leaves. Just a typical 30 seconds at the office [yawn]. How do these casinos stay in business.

I dropped close to 3Cs total, not a disaster for sure, and I ended on a positive note, but I felt no good vibes during my stay. In fact there were no vibes at all. My first roll at the live table told me Ihad left my DI talents at home, I have seen more life in a morgue – OK, I have never actually been in a morgue so I’m using my imagination on that one – and I felt sorry for the dealers manning their dead games, bored to tears and getting no tokes. My prognosis for Jackpot is that it will be a while before it gets back to “normal”. Furthermore, based on some reports I have heard f.r.o.m acquaintances I would apply that prognosis to the whole gaming industry. I am glad I took the trip, if for no other reason than I now do not have to wonder what might have been, but my executive summary of it is [shrug].
