Did not go to Deadwood during my last cross country drive. Regret it. Not sure if its a multi night place. It's just up the highway from Mount Rushmore, so if you want to visit there as well could be worth it.
If the only reason you are considering stopping off at Deadwood, South Dakota is to play craps, then IMHO it isn't worth the effort. However, if you'll already be in the area because you plan on visiting nearby Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park (on par with a very good national park -- fantastic place to view bison), Black Hills National Forest, Badlands National Park, and/or Sturgis, then you might as well stop by Deadwood, too. When we stopped by Deadwood in 2019, only @3 casinos had live craps (limited days/hours) and about the same number had bubble craps. Great part of the country for those who enjoy the outdoors, but playing craps there is about as boring as watching a filibuster on C-SPAN.
It's a grand little town with much history. The Craps tables were gone a year ago with one exception but I suspect a couple have returned but why not call and see? The bubblecraps were in two places. One nice thing about it is it is all close together and you can visit all the casinos. They are mostly converted from Hotels built in the 1800's. Hard not to have fun there.
If you have never been there and it isn't too far out of your planned route you should go. I've been to the Bucket of Blood Saloon in Virginia City Nevada 3 times. We don't drink and all they have for gambling is a few slot machines. I like going to old mining towns so we always visit while there. If you ever go to Virginia City take Hwy 341 back to Reno. It's a fun drive if you have a sporty car.
I'll be in enough casinos I don't need craps every night My wife was looking at pictures and all she saw were tons of motorcycles parked everywhere and said it's not a place she'd visit But I told her everyone who owns motorcycles like to drive those open roads and it's just a bunch of 70 yo trying to be cool on their bikes mt Rushmore 85 bucks a ticket to get in Fucking nerve if you as me
I think we will stop there after Blackhawk It's only 7 hours and isn't even that much out of our way back to route 80 east Going that way I'll will now probably stop in Sioux Falls hard rock if they are operating fully My only committed time is first week in end of June in kc and July 20 in Michigan hotel rates keep going up Gonna run is around 7 grand for 4-5 weeks on the road for rooms maybe even more if we stay at more casino hotels
I just checked 4 winds casino for july 16 17 and 18, a weekend......over 1000 for the 3 nights. new buffalo michigan.....imagine that....will be skipping them. perhaps room nearby....or maybe blue chip.....the prices are off the wall insane. its like that movie the perfect storm....everything is coming together when we are travelling. first, its the height of the summer, always a busy travel time. second, hotels have been closed or not making money till recenlty, they are just charging more. and ofcourse, america is opening up, and everyone wants out.....so demand is so high...the leading force for driving prices up....Id rather go in september, but like I said, Im committed to babysitting.
Where are you getting $85 bucks a ticket for Mount Rushmore? From the same guy offering to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge? Fees and Passes - Mount Rushmore National Memorial (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov) FYI, in case you'll be visiting other national parks in the future, you should consider buying the Senior Pass (lifetime version is currently $80). America the Beautiful - National Parks & Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass | USGS Store Note that you *cannot* buy the Senior Pass at Mount Rushmore.
Perhaps Four Winds is having issues with their server. I just tried checking for hotel room availability in July and, oops.
We looked at fees on the site and it said adults 80 something dollars Parking is 10 or 5 if you are over 62 I think it states Just reading what I saw I had to log into 4 winds a couple of times but that was the same price I got 2 weeks ago If we go to deadwood it might not be an issue as I won't stay at 4 winds overnight on weekend We will have to rough it out at a chain hotel that weekend
Who knows maybe she looked at annual passes? I can afford the 5 dollars to park I might go to sturgis to build my new tee shirt collection I'm sure they will have plenty in my size as I've seen some of those bikers are big boys
Back in June 2019, we stayed at Double Tree by Hilton Deadwood at Cadillac Jack's (@$109 per night AAA rate including taxes). It was one of 3 hotels connected to Cadillac Jack's Gaming Resort complex. Tru by Hilton and SpringHill Suites by Marriott are the others. I walked from the Double Tree to the historic downtown and back rather than trying to find a spot a little closer to park. Because of time constraints, we didn't plan any hikes at this stop so staying outside the historic downtown worked out well as a flatlander substitute. On our way out of town, we stopped by The Lodge at Deadwood Gaming Resort for lunch at Oggie's Sports Bar. This resort is a very nice place on the outskirts of town. Liman needs to get a van, and then learn the art of "casino camping". Ah, the smell of aged parking deck urine.
We stayed at that Hilton last June during the scamdemic. The rooms were filthy and from reviews read later it was a pattern. Next trip to Deadwood I will stay in Hill City away from the hoopla and it has great restaurants and other places. day trip to Deadwood or go the other way to monuments or whatever. Hill City is about 25 minutes away from Mt Rushmore or Deadwood or Crazyhorse monument. Keystone is also a nice day trip/tourist trap/hooplaville.
If memory serves, we didn't have any major issues with the hotel room during our stay in Deadwood. We were headed to Yellowstone / Grand Teton / Glacier National Parks, so we decided to spend a few days in South Dakota on the way. Stopped off at Badlands NP, Custer State Park (well worth it) and Mount Rushmore, in addition to Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Deadwood, Sturgis and, of course, the ultimate tourist trap in the state, Wall, SD. Even a detour to friggin' Larchwood, Iowa, before Sioux Falls to collect a $1 chip. We probably wouldn't take a road trip solely to visit South Dakota, which is why we made the stops in that state as part of the much bigger road trip.
You'll love Deadwood just remember when you play poker there...sit with your back to the wall and draw two cards if you're dealt aces and eights
I get that if you are taking the interstate. My next trip i will be north of that going thru all the small towns. Will give it a couple days.
