Do you remember your first time?

I don't mean in the back seat or the front seat.

Your first time at the rail of a bank craps table?

I was twenty and in Vegas for first time, during Christmas. Never saw a casino or a craps game. I knew blackjack, so I tried to play that, but would get carded right away, so I started playing slots, but got attracted to craps pit by lots of yelling and such. I watched for awhile, and none of it made sense, but I noticed some players betting on the biggest spot on the table (field). Then I noticed that they appeared to be winning, cause the dealer matched their pile of chips.

I had no clue about buying in, so I threw some cash on the field. Dealer yelled, "money plays" and just like that I won $5. A lot of money back then. I parlayed the win and won again! $20! I was hooked for life. This seemed so easy I left the $20 out there. That's when the box asked me fo ID, which ended my first game of craps.

Not deterred, I walked the strip playing craps until I got carded, then on to the next joint. I noticed a pattern developing, that only when I was winning, I would get carded. One table where almost every bet I lost, It was maybe twenty minutes before I got carded. So I developed the hit and run craps strategy without even knowing it.

I remember being on information overload trying to absorb and make sense of this whirling dervish of a game I was caught up in. It was like being on another planet, like entering the twilight zone. It was a thrill ride.

As B.B. King would say, "The thrill is gone." But I keep going back, nonetheless, like being stuck in a bad marriage.

Played street craps, blanket craps in the military, and when I turned 21, went to Reno. Silver dollars on the craps tables, and pretty cocktail waitresses....and that was the beginning of a long, long love affair with both! :)

I was 11. We gambled in the caddy shack; poker/BJ/dice. Got 4 bucks a bag, didn't carry doubles till I got a little older. 4 bucks/8 bucks was lots of money then. We bet against each other, sometimes it would take more than 1 guy to fade the bet, monopoly dice, swearing, not much math........the beginning down the slippery slope. Often I would ride my bike home broke...didn't have much discipline.

    Her name was Abby.
(Sorry. I tear up every time I hear or play that song. I fear Abby took her life a couple years after we broke up.)

Oh, you meant that game. I don't remember the first session, but I do remember the second, which occurred during my first trip to a gambling venue (Las Vegas) during which I played craps. (Having been given Thorpe's Beat the Dealer by my parents when I turned 21 I had stuck to blackjack on previous trips, shunning craps as "too complicated" until I got Goodman's How To Win At....) It was around 1966 at the Tropicana. A guy dropped by to pass a few minutes before going to the show and held the dice for 90 minutes. He missed the show. Despite being a novice and young, and therefore conservative, I turned $50 into $1000. At the end of the hand I was the big bettor at the table with my $50 line bet, single odds, and minimal place bets (much to the house's relief I imagine). During the hand I also went from "3 right" to "Mr. L."

Thanks for the Sinatra. Will always regret not seeing him perform live. He was a genius, the likes of which will not be seen again. Sorry about Abby, and conjuring her memory with my post, but great to hear of your first craps game being a massive win! That was like 10k today!

It aint the meat its the motion
That makes your daddy wanna rock
It aint the meat its the motion
Its the movement it isnt the stock

Well, I got a girl who's so darn thin
There aint much of her but bones and skin
One thing about her I can understand
She wraps all around me like a rubber band, baby

It aint the meat its the motion
That makes your daddy wanna rock
It aint the meat its the motion
Its the movement it isnt the stock

Well, I want a girl whos built real fat
Kenny dont like to see em like that
But I like to see em big and tall
The bigger they come the harder they fall

It aint the meat its the motion
That makes your daddy wanna rock
It aint the meat its the motion
Its the movement it isnt the stock

Well, I want someone who feels like they got to have love
Love to look at the stars above
My little baby, I want you to know
Shell bring me home all of her dough

It aint the meat its the motion
It aint the meat, uhm uhm uhm
It aint the meat, I say the action
That makes your daddy wanna rock
    (Bring it down one time)

It aint the meat, its the motion
It aint the meat, I say the movement, girl
It aint the meat, its the action
That makes your daddy wanna rock
