What is the purpose of the three way bet: "High, Low, Yo"??? It doesn't solve any problems that I can tell, what you normally use a hedge for. Here is what I think: Innumerates playing the game of craps once heard this called out by another innumerate. He loved how "low" rhymed with "yo" So despite no apparent reason for the bet some fell in love with the poetry of the game and make this useless high edge bet to prove to other innumerates that they are skilled in the game of craps!

Please, please someone correct me on the above. I promise I will take you off ignore, that is how bad I want a better answer!!

The purpose of this bet is quite obvious, and it is the same as all of the of the other prop bets, namely, to suck the chips out off the rack faster. The casinos have a "catchy" name for this action also, "more FUN for the players". The catchy name, HORN HIGH YO, is like you say, very attractive to newbies, along with C&E, ALL THE HARDWAYS, CRAP CHECK, etc. when a player thinks that he is "HEDGING HIS BETS" what he is also doing is,"HEDGING THE CASINOS BETS". All of the center table bets, have prohibitive odds, and should always be avoided, period! I bet you can find THIS advice, in a whole lot of books. So, when you and FredP met up, Who got BLOviated?:D

Sorry, I just could not resist the urge to use that word in the post, it was mostly for FredP, as I am always trying to IMPRESS him.

I think that your assessment may be partially true, but I also believe people make those bets because of selective memory......they won a few of them in the past, and the nice pay off was recorded in their brain. The brain then conveniently ignores the losing bets.

the answer is simple, some people just want to gamble, go down on risky bets for that one nice payoff.
try to convince anyone who just hit 3 yos back to back increasing their bet each time that they are making a bad bet.
