I once met a nuclear engineer at Idaho National Laboratory who was outstanding in his field.

S.Geist (no relation to the other Geist): SERIOUSLY?
    --Skulk: Yeah, you're right. Lame.

Yep, it was a long way down....place called "Angels Rest" atop the Columbia River Gorge. A challenging hike, but well worth the effort!

    Must be an omission!

Or, more likely, "Many of our notable alumni have been extremely generous in their financial support of the university. We would love to welcome you to this prestigious group upon receipt of your 7 figure donation".

I am not so much concerned about cursive not being taught as I am about all the things they don't teach at all anymore
cursive is just one thing in a string of subjects no longer offered
I graduated high school back in 1958 , people graduating back in those days left with an education comparable
to at least first year college and maybe even second year

many people leaving high school are not qualified to enter a college of any kind , that is distressing
and it seems to be getting worse

that is the concern I have

Good point. Can't remember if it was this congress or the last one (4 years ago) where a bill was introduced with a clause saying that if passed it would not require the President's signature to become law.

Other concerns I have are 1) the teaching of alternative history, watering down or ignoring completely events and situations at the whim of a political majority, and 2) presentation of philosophies as scientific fact, again at the whim of a political majority.

I think it was auto builder Chip Foose lambasting the kids of today and the fact that many schools have eliminated shop classes...

"Kids today don't want to build anything, they just want to buy it"....

And then there's Tesla, and their new plant in Reno. Some people still know how to build things, but can anyone afford what they build? I sure can't, but that's because I'm a chunker.

I see so many Tesla's on the road here in Vegas...but I understand there are some reliability issues. For close to 100K, I almost want perfection.

You're right. They were actually not teaching some things back in your day. Like sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling.

On the other hand, that sure beats "kids today don't want to buy anything we build".

I'm agreeing with you. How is that an insult?

Not quite sure how you're drawing that conclusion. I was responding to TDV, who had included a quote he attributed to Chip Foose. Perhaps he (Foose, or whoever made the quoted statement) was lamenting the difficulty of hiring workers with the necessary skills. If that is true, part of the issue might also be company culture/work environment, compensation or geographical. Our current economy is primarily service driven, rather than manufacturing, and schools should prepare their students accordingly.

As for my response, I'm just stating Business 101. If a business can't sell its products (and cover costs, but that's another issue), game over. Doesn't matter who (or what) did the manufacturing or where it was done, etc.

OOPS. I had the wrong quote on my response. I was meant for J. Hall. Sorry.
