I am a new player and have become fascinated with craps over the past few weeks. I've been to the casino 4 times in the past two weeks, and have hit a bit of a lucky streak. While I've been working to tweak my strategies, the one thing that I can't seem to do myself is roll well. I've been winning off of every one else's rolls. The last time I went, I skipped my rolls every time. I see people set the dice and throw the dice to certain areas of the table. Is there really a reason why they do this? Do we really control the rolls at all with how we throw the dice? I'll take any comments I can on this, because I want to learn more about the game.

    here we go...

You will find two camps. Those who believe you can inflkuence the outcome based on the way you set and throw the dice. I will let them speak for themselves.

I and many others are from the camp that says each roll of the dice is random. I believe there are just too many variables in the way you pick up the dice, throw them, the way they land, how bouncy the table is, the way they hit off the little bumps (pyramids) on the back wall, etc .

So do I throw the dice? Absolutely. It is part of the fun of the game and that is what I am there to do - have fun. In my 25 years of playing, I have had some big rolls, holding the dice for well over a half hour on several occassions. I also have had my share of seven outs. I do not win all the time, nor do I lose all the time. I win when I throw and when others throw. I lose just as much on other's roll as I lose on my rolls.

Also I, like many others, enjoy the superstitions of the game. For example, if I am tossing the dice well, I will try to do it the same way everytime. Often I will set the dice with the threes on top in a v. It seems to be lucky for me. I try to avoid hitting the chips when I throw. There are others techniques. Develop your own style. People looking at me when I am on a hot streak might think I "controll"" or "influence" dice. I don't believe that at all. It is just what I do. When I see others at the table doing it, that is what I believe as well.

So if you believe that throws are random, enjoy yourself. Take controll of the dice and throw them. If you believe in the dice influencers, pass the dice to someone who looks like they are doing it. But chances are, they are no luckier in their throws than you or me.

JHPA gave a pretty good answer.

I would add...have a reason for everything you do at the table.

Also, a sure fire way to extend your roll is to bet the Dark side when you are the shooter.

I suppose I'll be the guy who is in the camp that says dice can, indeed, be influenced. Just because dice are cubilcle doesn't exclude them from the same laws of physics that other objects are... just makes it more difficult (golf balls are not perfect spheres themselves, and you can see the influence there). The backwall, yes it looks scary, but its designed in a way that it generally doesn't cause too much upset... in fact I would say that on occasion it actually helps. It could be designed to do alot worse. You might want to do some web searches for dice control.
Either way, influence or no influence, throwing the dice is part of the fun of the game, and if you can do it with style instead of just lobbing them pointlessly, why not?

JHPA, with all due respect, it sounds that you at least do some dice influence (especially if you are setting your dice), but my assumption is mainly based that you try to toss your dice the same way.

To the OP, I find that some toss the dice the same area (usually without setting) because of superstition, e.g. if it worked good the 1st time, why not the second.

I believe that dice can be slightly influence, but I do not want to start another debate on this topic. But like JHPA says, develop your own style and let me add, develop your own beliefs on the subject of dice influence. For me I already understood the argument for randomness, so I looked up videos on dice influence on Youtube for the arguments for.

Overall, ignore those who get upset at you at the table at the way that you throw and most important, try to have fun.

I may be very wrong in my beliefs, but I believe that what I do is based on superstition and fun. I do not believe I am influencing the dice in the least. Sometimes one die bounces or it lands flat. Somtimes they bounce off the pyramids, sometimes they don't quite reach them....or one will and the other won't. Do they turn over 3 times in the air or 3 and a half times? who knows.

"try to have fun" This is a noble sentiment. The best way I know to have fun is to hit two way bets for me and the dealers. 2nd place is winning money. 3rd is finding that rare shooter, the "rhythm roller", who can make us all money. Now THAT'S FUN!!!

Well, if you seem to be having a run of bad luck while you're the shooter, simply pass the dice. This way, in addition to avoiding any bullshit from the rest of the players, you can focus exclusively on managing your wagers and when to press, etc. Let the other players shoulder the weight for awhile. One thing about luck, it'll eventually turn around.

    WRONG on ALL counts -

Count #1 - It might take an idividual a few turns with the dice to find the " right " or " sweet " spot on each individual table that you are shooting/throwing on - it also might take a few turns/throws to settle " down or in " at that particular table -

Count #2 - Screw the rest of the players at the table - be concerned about yourself - focus on YOUR shooting and YOUR betting - NOT THEIRS - nor their comments - good or bad -

Count #3 - NEVER BET ON RANDOM SHOOTERS - they are unpredictable and you will do the same as they do in the long run - LOSE !

Play your own game and ignore the other idiots at the table - UNLESS - you are with a group of DI's - then you still want to be cautious with your betting - refer to Count #1's response !

Good Luck at the tables !
