A few years back the referees in our (American) version of football went on strike. Several games were played with "replacement" referees, who were not even from the college level. The result was ridiculous, the "final straw" coming in a game where two referees were standing facing each other, one signaling touchdown (offensive score), the other signaling touchback (defensive interception). Still the National Football League refused to settle the dispute...

...until the television networks said they would no longer televise the games, and therefore not pay the league for them, because they were not of professional quality. THE VERY NEXT DAY the strike was over!

Reminds me of Babe Ruth, one of the greatest baseball players in history of the game. He was asked how he felt making more money ($80K vs. $75K) in 1930 than the President of the United States. His response: "I know, but I had a better year than (President Herbert) Hoover":

Today, making (considerably) more money than the President of the United States is the rule, rather than the exception, for professional athletes in Major League Baseball, NBA, NFL and NHL. Not sure about salaries in MLS. It's quite expensive to take a family of 4 to a major league baseball game if you want decent seats. Add in the cost of parking, food & beverages, and perhaps a souvenir...

Did you see Real - Sevilla 3-2?
For me that game was the worst in history of UEFA Super Cup. Even fans looked like dead that game..

This is true at the state level as well. In only 11 of the 50 states is the highest paid state employee not the head coach of either a school's (American) football or basketball team. Source:

But in some cases that coach earned their money, the schools profited. Can't say that for most of the other "state" officials. :)

Chris Peterson was the highest paid Idaho state employee during his tenure as head football coach at Boise State. (Don't know if current head coach Bryan Harsin is also getting bucks that big, but the quoted article implies he did inherit the state's top salary position.) Peterson definitely made BSU football nationally visible with the win over Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, and for that he certainly deserved to be compensated. But above all teachers? I have to wonder if we as a nation have lost sight of what is important at an institution of higher education.

Damn straight Urban Meyer should be making a lot more than John Kasich. He's done a much better job since arriving n Columbus than has the governor.

Oh, many state officials have profited...at the expense of the taxpayers.

He did an excellent job at Boise State and hopefully will get Washington back on track so I don't have to see those awful Oregon uniforms on tv as often. As for faculty compensation, traditionally once a professor received tenure, absent a felony they had job security for life -- and for many that usually meant they abdicated their teaching responsibilities. As such, many were (are) highly compensated for not doing their job. In addition, many academics receive compensation and research funding from other entities, so it's not just the salary draw from the college/university.

I do not know of the conditions in other countries, but in the U.S. we have children -- CHILDREN -- starving. Would not a small tax (0.1%?) on such transactions -- call it sales, value added, James's (most likely after LeBron in our country) -- help mitigate this situation?

You are right. Our life sometimes ( even always) is not so fair.
