A few years back the referees in our (American) version of football went on strike. Several games were played with "replacement" referees, who were not even from the college level. The result was ridiculous, the "final straw" coming in a game where two referees were standing facing each other, one signaling touchdown (offensive score), the other signaling touchback (defensive interception). Still the National Football League refused to settle the dispute... ...until the television networks said they would no longer televise the games, and therefore not pay the league for them, because they were not of professional quality. THE VERY NEXT DAY the strike was over!
