The game against Finland clinched the gold medal, but wasn't a true Gold medal game (like there is in Olympic basketball). The convoluted carrying over of points from division matches was nonsense. USA carried over a tie (1 point) while the Soviet Union carried over a win (2 points), so Team CCCP was up a point going into the final four; thus, because of the point deficit even before Final Four play started, basically every game was a must-win for Team USA. For all intents and purposes, USA vs. Soviet Union was the de facto gold medal game in 1980 (since USA wasn't playing Sweden again). Team CCCP was the defending Olympic gold medalist and the proverbial 800 lb. gorilla in ice hockey. Check out some of the romps the Soviet Union managed during division play.

The spot where Herb Brooks crashed his car and died is just a few miles north of me on the interstate. It is well known. Most people probably at one time or another point it out.

His death was a big loss for the US Olympic hockey program. The 1980 US Olympic hockey team he coached beat a Soviet Union team of elite professionals in one of the biggest upsets in any sport in Olympics history. The 2002 US Olympic hockey team he coached also beat the Russian team in the semifinals, but by that time it (the Russian team) wasn't nearly the same dominant program as a result of changes in geopolitical arena.

He had to have been a heck of a hockey coach. One man can make a difference.

Unless you were in the car, how would it be determined that someone fell sleep?

What else he brought to Minnesota was he studied Russian hockey methods and in the youth programs here there was training for defense against what was known as "Russian Circles". They would get in your zone and do circles passing the puck till they got a shot. there would be two or three circles going depending on if the defense were involved. His coaching went right down the line for 15 years.
The way a lot of teams would counter this was to get the puck and just beat it down the boards checking, passing but take into their zone. Not pass it out to be picked up again.
So you compare this to a man on man defense or a zone defense which was what was the norm.

Yea TD I do not recall the circumstances. it was a surprise to everyone. it's a straight part of the freeway. I had a client who died close to where he did. She crossed the medium and did a head on. Both died. No one knew what happened. I drove to the spot the next day to try and figure out. It had rained and I think the water puddled. She lost control. Herbs death was weather related too I think.

Never gave a shit about hockey. The blatant poor sportsmanship, exhibited by the players and tolerated by the NHL, is appalling. Reminds me of Rodney Dagerfield joke, "I went to fight last night, and a hockey game broke out". This disease seems to be spreading. All professional sports should have a "zero tolerance", for any act of poor sportsmanship, it has reached epidemic proportions.

I agree. Hockey's no game for pussies. You need to do a marathon of Slap Shot. Two days straight should do it. Problem with most people who do not like hockey is they do not understand it and cannot keep track of what's going on as it moves so fast.
As for fighting it's been part of the sport since forever. it is one of the first sports to recognise that if a player gets dirty you can kick his ass. We need a lot more ASS KICKING IN THIS COUNTRY.

Yea this and participation trophies and there are no losers....

Every country in the world is training their youth to fight and kill. We give our youths trophies for showing up.

That's how Coach Brooks managed to figure out how to defend against the Soviet Union / Russian Olympic hockey teams. People forget how good the Soviet Union was at ice hockey back then. The current Russian teams aren't even close. For years the Soviet Union's best players weren't allowed to play in the NHL, so western audiences weren't familiar with their players. The USSR had won Olympic gold in '56, '64, '68, '72, '76, '84 (US won gold in '60 & '80). Their team was comprised of professionals masquerading as amateur athletes. Kind of like our track & field teams have been over the years.
