Two weeks away from one of the great sporting events of the year. Santa Anita hosts the two day Breeders Cup once again. Fifteen Grade 1 races over two days attract America's best thoroughbreds along with many International stars.

    Pre-Entries 10/21
    Fields/Race Order Announced 10/23
    Fields Finalized 10/28

Gambler's fallacy- the mistaken belief that if something happens more frequently than normal during a given period, it will happen less frequently in the future. Horse racing may be a bit different because the event moves to different tracks, weather conditions vary and a whole lot of other variables.

Here's a strange angle for the Breeders Cup. There are currently 14 BC races. In the 35 years of the BC, favorites have won 31% of the races (104-332). However favorites have done poorly in 3 events. In the Juvenile Turf favs only have won 17%; Juvenile Fillies Turf 18%; Dirt Mile 17%. That's a significant variance, IMO. On the other hand, favs have won 53% of the Juvenile Fillies and 43% of the Distaff. If you are a casual player, you might want to take a chance with a longshot in the Juvenile Turf-Juvenile Fillies Turf and the Dirt Mile.

My pick is Zenyatta. Or am I 10 years too late?

The worse thing that could happen happened.

In US racing’s pinnacle event, in the stretch, in front of 67,000 people and a national prime time audience, in the state of California, at Santa Anita
park, Mongolian Groom snaps his left hind leg. Similar to Barbaro’s
break, except the other hind leg.

I feel so sorry for the horse, his handlers, fans and horse lovers everywhere. I am afraid that this tragedy will mobilize the Animal
Rights people like never before. They have succeeded in nearly eliminating
Dog Racing in America and they have made it clear that they are going after horse racing.

Very unfortunate injury for the horse. IMO, horse & dog racing have succumbed more to the explosion in casino gaming throughout most of the country. But if you can't beat them, join them. Earlier this year, Churchill Downs purchased a majority interest in Rivers Casino (Des Plaines, IL location only). It already owns Arlington International Racecourse located in a nearby suburb, but needed the casino license Rivers holds to operate a sportsbook in Illinois. The company also owns and operates several other casinos, including Oxford Casino (ME), Ocean Downs (MD), and Presque Isle Downs (PA).

I read they did everything humanly possible to comfort and save him...but in the end they had to destroy him....the count now has gone to 37 for the year :(
