Lyft/Uber in Las Vegas is only a year in operations here. Approximately 30% of the visitors are using Uber/Lyft over the traditional Taxies. Many of the hotels now have dedicated Uber/Lyft pickup and drop off areas, and others still are trying to figure out what to do with the Uber/Lyft riders because they built their Valet areas for Taxies and never anticipated a competitor to them.

The Taxi companies response to the Uber/Lyft arrival was to go to the city and remove the cap on how many Taxies they can have running at any given time. This has created a situation now where the Taxi lines are very long and the driver is making less money than ever before. So many of the senior Taxi drivers simply went to Lyft/Uber thus leaving the inexperienced and often the worst of the Taxi drivers still driving.

My sincere advice for anyone reading this and who visits Las Vegas is to ride Uber/Lyft and avoid the Taxies for your own safety!

my brother travels a lot, he only takes uber nowadays.
prices are better, service is better, and he hasn't had any problems with dependability.
I rarely take cabs. Last year I took 2 or 3 cab trips in vegas. Never again.
seems I got charged a lot more one way then I paid going. Didn't tip the second driver.
I always feel when the cab driver who picks you up at airport starts asking, so is this your first time to vegas? maybe hes getting ready to rip you off.
I think if you know your way around, a cab driver is not going to rip you off.
but then again, everyone in vegas seems to be working one scam or another, maybe the cabbies are doing their part?

I haven't taken a cab in many, many years. But in Vegas years ago, I would always ask the driver what the fare was from here to there. They of course know exactly what the fare should be, and most of them always gave me a good estimate......."It's $10-$12 depending on traffic.".......That was years ago. :)

Where do Uber/Lyft pickup at the LV airport? Do they have a designated area?

What I like best about Uber/Lyft is that there is some accountability

I say I will be there and will pay you, the driver confirms he is coming to get me- cancel too much and you are out of the game. I don't even know how many times cabs left me to wait and never came When I would call for one. I would call back dispatch and they did not even know who I was.

I feel safer too, I am not saying that nothing ever happens in Ubers but the ride is monitored, they know where rider was taken and for the driver at least there is a credit card trail to the customer. It's not like those poor cab drivers picking up a stranger on a corner and getting assaulted.

A month or so ago, a(n) uber driver here in the burg picked up a guy at the casino and took him home, but to the wrong home, to the drivers home.

Beat the shit out of the gambler and took his winnings, which was something like $1000. The driver obviously wasn't aware of Planck's constant, otherwise he might have driven to somewhere other than his own house.

over the past 30 years, whenever I cant get a lift to the airport or ride home, I use the same car service. they have never been late, always price upfront, and are super courteous/pleasant.
I feel safer knowing the same car service is sending someone than to contact uber and not know who is coming. but that's just me, as mentioned, my brother loves uber service and uses it all over this country when available
I don't even have the app on my phone, maybe I will try it eventually.
oh, one my wifes distant cousins visited us recently from another state, he drives an uber, maybe its lyft? mentioned he had to join for 300 or something, I don't recall exactly what he said, but he is an ass, Id rather have my car service pick me up then him. but I will get an uber app.

I don't know why anyone would take a cab again. Uber/Lyft is cheaper, clean and better vehicles and are much better with attitudes.

That is generally what everyone says about the Taxies here in Las Vegas, and why they prefer Uber/Lyft. There is a Death Watch list now for the taxi companies, it is expected within the year for all but the major taxi companies to fold.

They are still there. The word is that the smaller cab companies have sold to the larger ones. Western Cab sold to Yellow cab, as an example. Uber and Lyft are at full capacity now in the LV area, and with that I expect the cab companies to consolidate and clean up some of the more dirty aspects of their business.

uber or lyft can or cannot just stand by in taxi stands and take rides? in vegas area.

I cant imagine what uber/lyft did to the medallion cab industry in NY.
Medallion owners used to sell the medallions for nice bucks, limiting the independent cab drivers, but now all they need do is register and pay fee for uber/lyft.

Uber and Lyft are not Taxies. The service is simply a micro-contract between individuals for transportation. Uber nor Lyft cannot operate as a Public Car for Hire (TAXI).
There is still a demand for Taxis, as they are RIGHT THERE at the hotels and major hot spots as the taxi companies pay for the staging areas at those locations. Uber or Lyft the rider has to use the app to signal for a ride, and it can take awhile for the car to arrive since we cannot stage like a taxi can, so the impatient riders will opt for a taxi rather than wait.

The issue I see is that the LV taxi company has made major tactical mistakes!

In response to uber, they had the city remove the cap on the number of taxis that can be out at any time. This then created a glut of taxis and absurdly long taxi lines at the airport and hotels to the point where the taxi drivers where not making enough money to even survive on. At that point the good drivers simply left to drive Uber/Lyft because they can make more than driving a taxi, leaving the very bad and the worst taxi drivers working for the taxi companies (and some of them are criminals who will rob you!)

Second, the taxi companies protested Uber. This backfired in ways they cannot even understand! It is like the condemned man protesting his execution only to find that more people attended the execution to eagerly cheer on the executioner!

Third, the taxi companies did very little to clean up their act. They could easily purge themselves of the bad drivers and the out right criminals in their companies, stop playing favorites among drivers, stop the kickback from drivers to managers for better routes and times, and end the corruption that is rampant in the taxi industry. They choose to not do this.

Forth, the taxi companies could easily clean up the cars, make them nice inside and out. They choose to not do that, and for that reason riders will opt for Uber and Lyft because the cars are much nicer.

Fifth, the taxies still cheat and rob the riders. Many driver will Long-Haul a ride, that means to take them on a much longer route than is reasonable only to jack up the fee to the rider. Some drivers will claim that the meter is not working right and the fair is much higher than what it says. Other drivers will demand a tip that is unreasonable.

Lastly, many taxies will suggest Strip club where the driver will get a nice kickback for taking them there. Some of the drivers, the criminal ones, will take riders to fake clubs where the rider is put through a high pressure sales to buy a club membership, that is totally fake, for an absurd price and the driver gets a cut of the take. Criminal drivers will also take riders to a so called brothel in Las Vegas (brothels in Clark county are illegal) , though it is a 'false roll' meaning the rider is robed and the criminal drivers shares in the loot.

In my humble opinion, the LV taxis will continue to decline till either the city steps in to aggressively police them, or they purge themselves of the corruption and criminal elements in their own companies. No taxi driver I have talked to think that the taxi company owners have any will or desire to purge themselves of the corruption because it is so deeply ingrained in the culture in the companies.

Uber and Lyft are saturated at this point in Las Vegas. The user ratings purge out the bad/criminal drivers really fast, complaints from riders about a driver are taken very seriously and often Uber/Lyft simply suspends any driver with serious complaint about safety or for unethical behavior. Dirty cars, smelly drivers or just unsafe driving quickly purges out a driver. If the LV taxis had such rating system, they know all their driver would be rated out of a job, that is why they refuse to even want to hear from a rider about the ride, and if you call to complain they tell you to go away and die. The Nevada Taxi authority is useless too, they only collect fees from the taxi companies and simply don't to any enforcement. The LV police rarely enforce any laws or regulations about taxis too.

maybe once in 30 years I had a cab driver there take me for alonger ride, but I stiffed him as far as tip, as he know he deserved it, so it worked ok even for me.
They know how to spot their marks at the airport, hi, where you from? followed by the next question, first time in las vegas?

I hear from many Las Vegas visitors how they been abused by taxi drivers. I encourage them to report them to the police or taxi authority, though none do that.
If you think you been cheated by a taxi, simply don't pay. Make them call the police, most won't but they will threaten too and tell you that you will go to jail (and that is a lie). Most taxi who cheat riders are scum of the earth, and they know that if the cops are called they will likely go to jail for Wants and Warrants on them due to other crimes they are involved in.
